Business is about: no-added-sugar date spread
🍯 Tell us about yourself, your company, and how you got started.
I started Wanna Date when I was a student at NYU, working part time at a smoothie and acai bowl shop. I recognized that there wasn't a natural, sweet tasting spread on the market without added sugar or artificial stuff. I really hated added sugar, I really loved fruit, and I was really into dates at the time. I figured that "date butter" could and should totally be a thing. I blended the first batch in my dorm room and googled my way to starting the company my sophomore year.
🍯 How did you acquire your first batch of customers?
Through selling at markets and vegan fairs around NYC / Brooklyn, industry trade shows, and cold-emailing or walking into any store that looked like it might carry my product. Hustling, essentially.
🍯 What is your plan for the future? What trends do you foresee for your industry?
We plan to actively grow all of our channels: Amazon, Shopify, and to Retail/Wholesale distribution. As always, food is trending healthier and healthier and consumers are getting smarter and smarter.
🍯 Any other lessons/advice you’d like to share with other fellow entrepreneurs?
The realest entrepreneurs have unwavering will and determination to make their dreams a reality. I said it best on Shark Tank: "failure" is just when you quit. I talk a lot about the reality of running a business on my YouTube channel, check it out!
